a 2021 birthday

Every year around the middle of April I start to take care of myself a little more. I begin focusing on the aspects of myself which I typically ignore throughout the rest of the year. Usually this means a haircut, painting my nails, and picking up a book or movie for myself. I attempt to make April different than other months. April is different. April is my birth month, and I’d be darned if I didn’t at least take one day to acknowledge that.

Last year, due to pandemonium, I was not able to get a birthday haircut. It has been a long time since I’ve had a haircut that I liked. And, I finally felt just anxious enough to go to a hairdresser and have a simple time. No washing, no styling, just a good cut.

So, here I am. eight inches shorter, and a little lighter.

I’d have to say that a 2021 birthday was sad, but also a relief. I made it through another tough year.

I wasn’t able to celebrate exactly how I had planned, but I was able to spend some good, quality time with family and the pup. I bought dinner from a friend’s popup and shared some cannoli with my younger sister. The day was good. And, I’m hoping to extend this self care month into the future and carve out one day a month in which I treat myself to something small.
