In the latest thriller from New York Times bestseller Riley Sager, a woman returns to the house made famous by her father’s bestselling horror memoir. Is the place really haunted by evil forces, as her father claimed? Or are there more earthbound—and dangerous—secrets hidden within its walls?

Taken From GoodReads

This is my first ever Riley Sager novel. Walking into it with nothing but the recommendation from trusted bookish friends, I didn’t really know what to expect. I haven’t read many thrillers, and I am known to actively avoid horror-related anything. So, I cautiously attempted to read this one and I’m glad to say that I was delightfully surprised. I didn’t realize just how attached I would become to the atmosphere of this book. Scary parts included, I loved it.

I definitely could not have picked a better time to read this one – my house is currently… semi-falling apart. It’s live-able. There’s a giant hole in our living room ceiling (thanks to a very annoying flood in the upstairs bathroom) and much of the carpet has been removed (and hasn’t been replaced quite yet) so, the setting of this novel definitely paralleled some of my real life. That was an irony for which I had not prepared.

This one was just as twisty as I was led to believe, and had me checking my living room ceiling for unwanted gifts from previous owners. (No joke). Also, friends, if you’re not one for scary stories, I would not recommend reading this one at night. And, if you happen to accidentally read this one until 11:00 pm and need a pallet cleanser before bed, I would recommend an episode of Gilmore Girls (Copper Boom!) and a cup of chocolate milk. Sager approaches this story through alternating chapters of the then and the now. Usually this would throw me off but with this one … it works. Both stories complimented each other, and each was captivating. And, each made me want to put up drywall so much faster. The ending was just as twisty as I had been led to believe, and I passed this one on to my grandmother. Hopefully, she enjoys it as much as I have.

This was the first book in a while that I’ve solely read physically. I wonder what my next Riley Sager book will be. As always, I’m open to suggestions and buddy reads! I’m @xLeah2k13 on Twitter.
